Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums and the supporting structures of our teeth that can lead to loss of bone around our teeth. It is a common disease and if not treated, will result in tooth loss. It is caused by plaque, a sticky substance on your teeth, that is home to harmful bactera and toxins. The bacteria forms pockets around the teeth and as the disease progresses the bone and other tissues are damaged. Even if you brush and floss daily you may not be able to remove all the plaque and then it hardens into a rough surface called calculus or tartar. A professional dental cleaning is the only way to remove calculus.

Many people with periodontal disease have no pain or symptoms. There are very few warning signs, or possibly none at all. If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease there are several treatment options. Sometimes all you need is better homecare and regular professional cleanings. In more severe cases, your dentist may recommend scaling and root planing, or possibly periodontal surgery. Preventing and treating the disease as early as possible is the best way to keep your mouth and smile healthy. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss, eat a balanced diet, avoid tobacco, and visit your dental office regularly.
